Students create ornaments for downtown Christmas tree

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, thanks to Evergreen Elementary School students.

Last Wednesday, students in every grade level had an opportunity to create ornaments for this year's community Christmas tree. All manner of colorful baubles were crafted and made ready to adorn the tree.

Teacher Jenn Davies' third grade class was busy the day before Thanksgiving using cellophane to wrap empty and cleaned food containers, such as strawberry packaging, to make ornaments that look like giant hard candies such as butterscotch or peppermints.

"I'm very excited," Davies said as students worked on their ornaments. "This is my favorite time of year."

Davies has a schedule she calls the "Countdown to Christmas" starting on Dec. 1 in which students create a different decoration every day until Dec. 16 before the winter break. Stocking Day, The Grinch Day, Christmas Cookie Day and Elves Day are among the various art themes during the countdown.

The community tree was felled last week by a Wrangell Municipal Light and Power crew before the wet weather arrived and is being stored out at Shoemaker Bay until Thursday, when it will be transported downtown and put up between the Elks Lodge and L&M gas station. The 45-foot spruce tree is taller than last year's 40-foot tree.

Decorating will take place a few days before the Dec. 10 tree lighting ceremony.
