The Wrangell Swim Club traveled to Petersburg to compete in the November Rain swim meet on Nov. 11 to 13. It was the first time since 2019 the club has competed in the meet.
Club coach Jamie Roberts said the team didn't compete the past two years due to COVID-19. This year's team included 19 swimmers, of which 12 were at their first meet.
Swim clubs from all over Southeast competed at the event, and Wrangell's swimmers competed in 146 individual races, which included 83 first-time swims with 24 personal bests and seven relay races. Recent Southeast high school regional champion Jack Roberts won eight first-place finishes.
Jamie Roberts was joined by parks and recreation department director Kate Thomas, who helped out on deck. The team was cheered on by several parents and other family members who made the trip, Roberts said.
Competition rules are different for swim clubs as opposed to high school meets.
"All swimmers aged 13 and older can only compete in the open category," Roberts said. "However, any age swimmer can participate in the open category. Younger swimmers often compete in their age group and also in the open category in order to increase their opportunities to swim."
Roberts said results for the open category rank all swimmers together, regardless of their age.
