Busy lifestyles, reluctance and just old-fashion stubbornness can sometimes get in the way of addressing health care needs. The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium has the remedy for all the excuses.
From 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Nolan Center, SEARHC will hold its first health fair since 2019.
The free event will provide information and services on everything from cancer prevention to lab services. There will even be drawings and prizes, including 50,000 Alaska Airlines miles and a children’s bicycle giveaway.
“Sometimes it may be easier for a patient to come to an event like this on a weekend morning, rather than doing so during the week,” said Lyndsey Schaefer, director of marketing and communications at SEARHC. “Convenience and family support are some of the factors for why a patient would come to the health fair, rather than make a regular appointment with a provider.”
Schaefer also said the fair is a chance to help the underserved population in Wrangell, which the health care organization is trying to remedy.
Thirty SEARHC staff members will work at the fair to provide information and services on behavioral health, diabetes prevention, men’s and women’s health, patient health benefits, tobacco cessation resources, the WIC program (supplemental nutrition for women, infants and children) and more.
The event is being held in partnership with Alaska Health Fair, which provides community and worksite health fairs and lab testing.
