Sentinel unfair in its criticisms of Trump

Wrangell Sentinel publisher Larry Persily’s reaction to former President Donald Trump’s latest indictment was as predictable as the rain in Wrangell. He always seems to have something negative to say about Trump, but when past accusations proved to be false, he never set the record straight.

The last line from his June 14 opinion piece, “Their defense is as offensive as the crime,” looks like a Freudian slip. It says, “No reason to keep an open mind when politics rule the day,” which explains a lot. Being a fan of freedom, democracy and the U.S. Constitution, I think that the above quote is an expression of bias, in this case to everything Trump.

Persily wrote in a May 31 opinion column (speaking of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's impeachment): “As usual with the former president, he has his facts wrong.” Really? It looks like Democrats are the ones who have their “facts” about Trump's imaginary crimes wrong. So far, six years worth of them turned out to be unsupported, unsubstantiated and debunked. Both impeachments resulted in innocent verdicts but were not officially reversed.

Russia, Russia, Russia/Crossfire Hurricane, quid pro quo/Ukraine, etc. never happened the way Democrats claimed, so who was wrong and lying, and where are the facts? Trump was also right about the FBI spying on him.

I get it, you do not like Trump and that is OK. But please allow me a suggestion: to maintain a shred of respectability for the Wrangell Sentinel: You should at least pretend to balance your partisan reporting with mentioning Hunter Biden’s laptop, that Joe Biden is being investigated by U.S. House Republicans for alleged corruption and such. Let’s have some inclusivity and equity.

Yes, nobody should be above the law, but laws should also apply to everybody equally. The cornerstone of U.S. justice is still the presumption of innocence principle, right? At this point your claim that Trump stole classified documents is slightly premature. He is innocent until proven guilty, so let the court decide if he broke the Presidential Records Act of 1978 or not.

Trump retained top secret, classified documents in his possession because of the Presidential Records Act and the court will decide if he had a right to declassify them or not. It was discovered former Vice President Mike Pence, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Biden also had classified documents in their possession, yet no prosecution took place so far.

Selective justice and persecution of political opponents are ugly signs of a one-party dictatorship, nothing a democratic republic should allow or be proud of. Unfortunately, the weaponized Department of Justice, FBI and Democrats’ fervor to silence their main political opponent reminds me of what I saw while living in Czechoslovakia ruled by communists. I am afraid that America is not the “shining city on the hill” anymore.

I have no political affiliation but In today’s world of fluid genders my pronouns are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
