Wolves wrestle in round robin and scramble in Sitka

The Wrangell Wolves wrestled at Mt. Edgecumbe High School in Sitka this past weekend, with a round robin on Friday, Oct. 27, and a scramble on Saturday, Oct. 28, earning 67 wins, 24 losses, and 55 pins, according to wrestling coach Jack Carney.

Carney said most of the brackets were unfinished. As a result, many who would have placed including a few who likely would have come in first, simply ran out of time. “They didn’t come close to finishing the brackets, because they were big, huge brackets,” he said.

Of the brackets that were finished, undefeated freshman Hailey Cook in the 107-pound weight bracket came out on top with five wins. “Hailey beat a senior again to take first place in the scramble,” Carney said. “All her wins were pins.”

Junior Della Churchill at 120 also placed first with four wins and no losses in the tournament. Sophomores Ian Nelson at 140 and Katelynn Gillen at 165 took second place. Junior Vanessa Johnson placed third at 165.

Among those who didn’t place because their brackets ran out of time — but were undefeated this weekend — were senior Mia Wiederspohn at 145 with seven wins, and freshman Everett Meissner, who scored five wins at 145.

Another sophomore who didn’t place in the tournament suffered his first defeat. “Boomchain Loucks took his first loss,” Carney said, “but he still got … six wins and one loss with six pins.”

Others who lost only once during the tournament but were unable to place due to unfinished brackets were junior Kyan Stead at 125, sophomore Cody Barnes at 215, freshman Jackson Carney at 130, and freshman Cooper Powers at 119.

Carney said that so far this season, his team’s record stands at 162 wins, 65 losses and 131 pins.

The Wolves are next scheduled at the Anchorage Christian Schools tournament Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-4.
