Wrangell wrestlers win 8 firsts, take third place overall at Southeast

The Wrangell Wolves wrestling team took third overall at the Southeast Division II regional championship, with eight individuals coming home with first-place finishes in their weight classes.

Wrangell Junior Della Churchill was voted Outstanding Female Wrestler of the tournament.

Mt. Edgecumbe, with 202 points, won the Division II title in the Friday and Saturday, Dec. 8-9, competition at Juneau's Thunder Mountain High School. Haines came in second at 138, with Wrangell tallying 134.5 points, followed by Sitka, Petersburg, Craig, Kake, Hoonah, Skagway, Southeast Island School District and Metlakatla.

In the girls division, Wrangell also came in third overall with 82 points, behind Mt. Edgecumbe at 104 and Ketchikan at 103.

Haines won the team Sportsmanship Award.

Wrangell's eight individual championships were the most of any team in the tournament, Wolves' coach Jack Carney said.

Of Wrangell's 18-wrestler roster, 12 qualified for the upcoming state tournament and an additional four were selected for the competition by the Alaska School Activities Association, Carney said.

The state tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 15-16, in Anchorage.

Carney said he was happy with how the team competed and the third-place finishes at Southeast. "It just shows how much hard work the kids are putting in," he said. "It shows that the program is working."

Edgecumbe; sophomore Ben Houser at 125 against Elden Andrew of Mt. Edgecumbe; sophomore Ian Nelson at 140, who took down Radson Paul of Mt.
