Registration opens May 1 for the library’s summer reading program for kids, with some big numbers from last year to match.
More than 90 kids signed up for last year’s program sponsored by the Irene Ingle Public Library, reading almost 2,000 books.
It’s open to children who will be going into kindergarten through ninth grade in the next school year that starts in August.
The program starts May 28 and will run through Aug. 3, with a party on Aug. 10, said Sarah Scambler, library director.
“Each book is worth a certain number of points. For every point you earn you get a ticket,” which can be entered into drawings for cash or prizes, Scambler explained. “There will be a party and a special prize at the end of the program for all who accumulate at least 10 points.”
Starting May 1, kids can register at the library or online at wrangell.com/library. Registration will close June 30. The library is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
“To earn points, select and read an Accelerated Reader book at your reading level or above,” according to the program’s instructions sheet. After reading a book, kids will take a test on a computer at the library, answering questions about the book.
Young readers must pick up their tickets for the drawings each week for deposit into the prize jars of their choice. “Tickets cannot leave the library.”
