It’s almost time for more than 100 Little Leaguers to start their session, with the opening ceremony set for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27, at Volunteer Park.
And while the kids are getting ready, league officials still need volunteers for the twice-a-week games.
The season will run through the second week of June, and volunteers can sign on for as few or as many games as they want, said Briana Schilling, who is in her eighth year as league president.
It takes at least three people each night to run the concession stand, with volunteers also needed to work as plate umpire, base umpire, run the scoreboard and keep the scorebook, and run the pitching machine for minor league games or the pitch counter for major league games, she said.
“We still need people to fill positions every game night,” Schilling said April 17. Games are at 6 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday, with the league maintaining a volunteer calendar to ensure all the slots are filled.
The concession stand is particularly important, Schilling said. “That is our main source of funding.”
Little League is open to players age 4 through 16, and although registration started last month, “we will always take late registration … we don’t turn anyone away,” she said. But call soon, Schilling said, as teams already have organized and practices are underway.
