U.S. Forest Service wildlife technician Gwenn Baluss holds an Oregon dark-eyed junco while banding birds during the Stikine River Birding Festival on April 26 at Volunteer Trail. Baluss attached a small aluminum ring to the bird's leg and recorded measurements like weight, size, gender and age. The number on the band along with the bird's measurements are recorded in a database, allowing the birds to be tracked as they migrate and people find the birds and retrieve the bands.
