Logging show was a large group effort

It takes a lot of support to put on a logging competition the size of the Chuck Oliver Logging Show. The following individuals and businesses are the unsung heroes of the logging show. It is for this reason that the 2024 Chuck Oliver Logging Show and greased-pole events would like to thank the following individuals and businesses for their help in making this year’s logging show and greased pole a success.

The Bay Co. and NAPA: David and Kim Powell. For years, Dave has been supplying fuel, oil and storage support for our competition saws.

Mike Matney provided his dump trailer and Kubota tractor for cleanup, and his self-loading short logger for gathering logs and transporting to and from the logging show arena.

Samson Tug and Barge: Nate Bliss provided a container to store our logging equipment during the days leading up to and after the show. Nate also set up Alaska Marine Lines’ equipment to create our podium.

Alaska Vista: Sylvia Ettefagh donated two $100 bills. They were placed on the bullseye during the ax-throwing event.

Brenda Schwartz Yeager donated one of her prints for the winner of the rolling pin toss.

Ottesen’s Ace Hardware donated a Milwaukee 18-volt chainsaw. This was given to the winner of the power-saw bucking event.

Johnson Construction: Harley and Dustin Johnson provided their boom truck with Dustin operating, set the pole and picked it back up after Toni Marie’s greased-pole event.

AML provided the equipment used to build the podium.

Tom Roland coordinated long distance in the background.

Kevin Stutz for his CAT 966 wheel loader for log harvesting and placing logs in the logging show arena.

Rock Hard Construction: Dave Frank provided a flatbed for moving the logging show equipment to and from the chamber of commerce storage unit.

River Guggenbickler helped with log harvesting as well as show setup and teardown.

Free Guggenbickler helped to get the alder used in the chopping event.

Judge Coniff was once again field judge, working with Alex Sargent to preside over the events.

Liz Roundtree worked the podium, tracking contestant order and times for each event.

Rayme Privett was our logging show emcee and did a great job.

James Montgomery helped with show setup and teardown and arena cleanup.

Last, but by no means, I want to thank Toni Marie Oliver. After five years of not having a greased-pole event, Toni Marie stepped up once again to run the event. It has always been a favorite for the kids of Wrangell and this year was a lot of fun. She even had two individuals who reached the end of the pole to win the $100 prize.

Toni Marie also worked side by side with me to get everything ready for the logging show. She was my flagger for moving equipment and stopping traffic when falling timber for the event. During the show she filled in everywhere and anywhere she was needed from the podium to the arena. She even cheered on an old guy like me out there trying to compete with the kids.

Thank you to everyone who showed up and cheered the contestants on. If I missed anyone, I truly apologize.
