The Arts in the Cove festival, formerly known as Arts and Seafood, is scheduled for Aug. 9 and 10 in Coffman Cove.
The festival — about 40 boat miles southwest of Wrangell on Prince of Wales Island — promotes local artisans and features everything from handmade fine art to crafts, soaps, candles, oils, jams, jellies, syrups, fur, seafood, smoked meats and fry bread. The festival also will feature live music and entertainment, along with prize raffles throughout the two days.
The festival, which is free to attend, will run from 3 to 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10. Art and food booths will shut down at 8 p.m. on both nights but entertainment will run until 10 p.m.
The Powers Band from Wrangell will perform Saturday night, followed by fireworks. Green Card Marriage, a band from Hollis, will also perform at the festival and there will likely be Native dancing, said Carla Morrison, president of the festival’s board.
She said though the festival has a new name and a new board of directors this year, it’s the same great festival that has been running the second weekend in August since 2010, except in 2020 and 2021 when the COVID pandemic shut down a lot of activities.
Morrison said they are expecting 300 to 400 people to attend the event, along with up to 40 vendors.
This year’s festival also features a seafood dip contest and a fish poetry open mic event.
Two Wrangell marine transportation businesses, Muddy Water Adventures and Breakaway Ferry and Freight, will make trips to Coffman Cove to ferry people from Wrangell who want to attend.
Morrison said most of the vendors are from Prince of Wales Island, but some will venture from Wrangell, Ketchikan and other surrounding communities.
Arts in the Cove still has space available for vendors and sponsors. Costs for vendors vary depending on the size of the booth but range from $40 to $100. To become a vendor at this year’s festival, visit http://www.artsinthecove.com to fill out an application.
