Bearfest marathon, half-marathon draw 20 runners

It was a close finish in the Bearfest half-marathon, with one minute separating the top two finishers of Carter Howell, at 1:51, and Steven Ditgen, with a time of 1:52.

Ian Fuller was the runaway winner of the full marathon at 2:49, with Wrangell High School alum Galen Reed coming in second at 3:25.

The 26.2-mile marathon drew nine runners, with 11 racers in the half-marathon on the last day of Bearfest on July 28.

Reed, a 2008 graduate of Wrangell High School, planned a family trip from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to run in the marathon. His cousin, Kent Johnson, from Anchorage, also a Wrangell graduate, volunteered at the aid station at Mile 8 of the race.

Their wives — Marie Reed and Valerie Schleich-Johnson — ran the 5K with their children (Max Reed and Hazel Johnson) in a stroller made for two, reported Wrangell’s Kay Larson, who identified herself as “one proud grandma/great-grandma” of the Reeds.

Reed is a structural engineer, a fitting career after he competed in the 2012 National Student Steel Bridge Competition as a member of Northwestern University’s steel bridge building team.

Other marathon finishers were Sarah Huot, at 4:11; Aiden Lorenz, 4:21; Matthew Callesano, 5:23; Nick Callesano, 5:35; Robyn Becker, 5:38; Lisa Vizzoni, 5:38; and Christina Callesano, 5:38.

Other half-marathon finishers were Dale McMurren and Chris Stewart, both at 1:56; Andrea Laughlin, 2:19; Kaylee Hammerich, 2:21; Bailey Scheib, 2:22; Michael Vizzoni, 2:50; Alissa Vizzoni, 2:50; and Jacqueline Fabrizzio, 3:11.
