With a little over a week left before the filing deadline, six of seven incumbents on the assembly, school board and port commission have submitted paperwork or announced plans to seek another term in the Oct. 1 municipal election.
Candidates have until 4 p.m. Aug. 30 to complete and turn in the declaration form, which is available at the borough clerk’s office in City Hall.
Mayor Patty Gilbert was the first incumbent to file for reelection. She will seek a second two-year term.
Assembly Members Jim DeBord and Bob Dalrymple both have filed for reelection to a second three-year term. Both were elected in 2021.
As of Monday morning, Aug. 19, no one else had filed for assembly. If there are more than two candidates for the two seats, the top two vote-getters will win.
School Board Members Brittani Robbins and Angela Allen both are seeking reelection to three-year terms. Robbins, who also serves on the borough assembly, was elected to the school board in 2021. Allen also was elected to the board in 2021. Both are finishing up their first term.
Same as with the assembly election, if more than two candidates file for the school board seats, the top two vote-getters will win.
The terms of two port commission members expire this fall: John Martin and Chris Buness.
Buness, who was elected to the commission in 2021, said last week she plans to file for reelection to another three-year term.
The Sentinel was unable to reach Martin to confirm his plans. He is in his third term on the port commission.
Candidates for borough office are required to collect 10 signatures for their declaration form. Candidates for mayor and assembly must be a registered voter, at least 18 years old, and must have lived in Wrangell at least one year.
School board candidates must be at least 18 years old and a registered voter.
