Former resident Shirley Jean Bartlett dies at 79

Shirley Jean Bartlett, 79, passed away peacefully in Coos Bay, Oregon, on Aug. 3, 2024.

Shirley was born on Jan. 20, 1945, in Oakland, California, to Wendell Denton and Pheobe "Babe" Bartlett. She grew up moving between logging camps until they moved to McKinleyville, California, where she graduated from high school in 1962. After graduation, she met and married Edward Henry Sr. and had four children.

In 1980, she and her children moved to Wrangell where she worked in her mom's restaurant The Wharf. She worked there for a few years before she became a CNA at Wrangell General Hospital. During this time, she married Herman "Bud" Bartlett. They moved to Reedsport, Oregon, shortly after retirement, where she enjoyed traveling and one of her hobbies of taking scenic photos. Her husband died in 2021.

"Shirley had one of the most genuine kind hearted souls who was always helping people with a big smile on her face," her family wrote. "The biggest joys in her life were her children and grandchildren."

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Everett and Selma Fox; parents Wendell Denton, Pheobe and Tom Bartlett; husband Herman Bartlett; sister Susan Denton; sons Eddie and Mike Henry; granddaughter Shaylee Henry; nieces Shannon "Booga" Gillen and Rainie Byrd; great-niece Stacey Doak.

Shirley is survived by her children Bobbi (Tim) Gillen Sr. and Sherri (Grant) Briggs Jr.; daughter-in-law Deanna Henry; sister Jinx (Steve) Clark; brothers Dennis (Cheryl) Bartlett, Everette (Judy) Bartlett and Dale (Kris) Denton; 10 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; nine nieces and nephews, 18 great-nieces and nephews; and five great-great nieces and nephews.
