Nominations close Feb. 12 for WCA tribal council

Nominations are open for four seats on the eight-member Wrangell Cooperative Association tribal council.

Nominations will close at 4 p.m. Feb. 12. Voting will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at the WCA Cultural Center.

The terms of council members Jason Clark, Tom Gillen Sr., Luella Knapp and Sandy Churchill will expire this year. All are eligible to run for election to another term, said Esther Aaltséen Reese, tribal administrator.

Candidates for the council must be a member of WCA and on the tribe’s official voter list. The minimum age to serve is 18.

Members must live in Wrangell to serve on the council. The WCA has close to 900 members, with more than half living in town, Reese said.

The nomination form is available at the WCA office at 1002 Zimovia Highway or call 907-874-4304 for more information.

Tribal members at least 18 years old and registered on the WCA’s voter list are eligible to cast ballots in the Feb. 27 election. Enrollment in WCA is open until 4 p.m. Feb. 3. It’s the same deadline for tribal members who need to change their name on the voter list.

Members who will be out of town on election day, or want to vote early, can request an absentee ballot from the tribal office. Reese cautioned members to request and complete their absentee ballot in advance and not wait until the last minute and risk missing the election.
