Sentinel asks for community input at Saturday meeting

The Sentinel is inviting the public — newspaper readers and particularly non-readers — to a community meeting to share ideas and talk about challenges for the Sentinel in the years ahead.

The open house is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Stikine Inn.

The event is free, as will be the coffee and cookies.

Sentinel staff will talk about the paper — how it operates, how it makes decisions and its financial challenges — and then listen to the public and answer questions about the newspaper.

“The intent is to hear from people about what they like and don’t like about the Sentinel, but most importantly to hear from people who don’t read the paper and why not,” said Larry Persily, who has owned the Sentinel since he purchased it from the Petersburg Pilot owners in January 2021.

“No question people get a lot, maybe most of their news from social media these days,” Persily said. “We just need to figure out a better way to get the Sentinel into their world on a regular basis so that more people will know what’s happening in their community.”

The Sentinel plans to boost its online presence, but it will take more than that, the publisher said.

“We need to show people the value of having a local newspaper that covers the town, and we need to make it easier for them to get the news we work so hard to produce.”
