The borough is accepting letters of interest to fill one vacancy each on the assembly and port commission.
To submit a letter, either email Borough Clerk Kim Lane — municipal clerk of the year in Alaska for 2024 — at clerk@wrangell.com or drop it off at her office in City Hall.
As of Jan. 31, Lane said she had received three letters of interest. Phillip Mach and Scott McAuliffe submitted for the assembly seat, while Antonio Silva submitted for the port commission.
“More would be great!” Lane said.
Silva ran for port commission last fall and placed third in the election to fill two seats.
The deadline to submit a letter of application is 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11. Later that evening, the assembly will vote on an appointment for both seats at the borough assembly meeting.
Members of the borough assembly and port commission are required to be registered to vote in Wrangell and to have lived in town for at least the past year. Assembly members must be at least 18 years old; port commissioners must be at least 21.
The seats are open because Anne and Gary Morrison will be moving to Montana later this month to be closer to family. Anne Morrison served on the assembly since 2018 while Gary Morrison served on the port commission since 2019. Both resigned their seats last month.
Whoever is appointed will hold the seat until October, when the borough will conduct its annual municipal elections.
Assembly and port commission members serve without pay.
