Former resident Earl Jenkins dies at 87

Earl N. Jenkins, 87, passed away on Dec. 11, 2024, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

He was born on June 21, 1937, in Wrangell but left in his senior year of high school to further his education at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Earl was a career educator who taught in Cordova, Long Beach, California, and Las Vegas. He was a commercial fisherman during the summer months out of Cordova. He played the drums in the Country Sergeants band in Las Vegas and Arizona.

"Earl was so proud and often visited the Earl N. Jenkins Elementary School in Las Vegas that was named in his honor. He loved family, teaching, music, traveling and history. His life was filled with adventure and love. He will be greatly missed," his family wrote.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Jean Nelson, and brothers Dub and Babe Jenkins.

Earl is survived by his wife Shirley, and they were blessed with five children: Glenda, Debbie, John, Earl and Steve; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; brothers Art Nelson of Bremerton, Washinton, and Douglas Nelson, of Wrangell.

A celebration of his life at the Earl N. Jenkins Elementary School, 6950 Vegas Valley Drive, Las Vegas, Nevada, will be held on March 29, 2025, at 2 p.m.
