Though February is the shortest month of the year, there still is plenty of time to get your fingers working at the keyboard — or thumbs on your smartphone — to help guide decisions that will affect the town’s economy, health and children’s fun in the years ahead.
It’s as if someone proclaimed February as Community Survey Month.
But that’s OK. Better that people have an opportunity to share their opinions before decisions are made than being left behind to complain after the decision making is finished.
And it’s a triple header of opportunities this month in Wrangell to give your opinions.
The borough is working with a team from Oregon State University’s Sustainable Tourism Lab to survey residents on what they want and don’t want out of tourism.
Summer visitor traffic is increasing and the borough intends to use the survey results and the Sustainable Tourism Lab’s recommendations to determine how best to balance the good and the not-so-good impacts of tourism.
SEARHC is conducting an online survey of families with newborns and toddlers, or planning to have children, as part of a project to establish a Healthy Families Early Start program for communities throughout Southeast.
The health care provider plans to use the survey results to determine what services are already available in each community and what additional services are needed.
And the Wrangell parks and recreation department wants to hear from the public about what improvements they would like to see at the Shoemaker Park Playground and the Kyle Angerman Playground downtown.
The survey has just half-a-dozen questions. The idea is to learn what features and equipment are important to people at the two playgrounds. Parks and Rec is trying to raise funds to update and improve both sites, and would like to know what the public wants as it draws up its plans.
“We realize our playgrounds are in desperate need of revitalization, and that no amount of painting, wrenching or duct taping is going to solve our playground woes,” the department said in its announcement of the survey.
A link to the tourism survey will be posted soon on the borough website. The SEARHC survey is available at searhc.org/healthy-family-survey. The Parks and Rec playgrounds survey is at surveymonkey.com/r/R9CRRZG.
Find some time to help out by answering a few questions. It’s free, and your opinions are invaluable.
