Boys basketball drops back-to-back games at Mt. Edgecumbe

The high school boys varsity basketball team lost both nonconference games on a road trip to Mt. Edgecumbe High School on Feb. 14-15.

The Wolves currently sit in a convincing second place in Southeast with a 6-2 record. Their only in-conference losses came at the hands of 8-0 Metlakatla earlier this season.

While Wrangell will likely head into next month’s Southeast tournament as the No. 2 seed no matter what happens this weekend, the upcoming Friday and Saturday homestand against 0-8 Petersburg will be a good opportunity for Wrangell to get back on track after last weekend’s losses.

The Division 2A Wolves dropped the first game against Division 3A Mt. Edgecumbe 68-97 on Friday. Wrangell also lost Saturday’s game, 58-84.

Despite the ugly final scores, head coach Cody Angerman realized that Mt. Edgecumbe had more to lose in the matchup than Wrangell. Because of this, he found it easier to find the positives in the otherwise rough games.

“We were down 18 or 20 at halftime, but then we had it cut to seven or eight by the third quarter,” he said of Saturday’s game. “It was hard, but having that little comeback, having them on their heels was a good feeling.”

Looking toward Petersburg, Angerman does not want his team to underestimate the Vikings. The rip-roaring, high-flying Wrangell style of play is Angerman’s bread and butter, but Petersburg likes to slow the game down and play at their own pace.

“We don’t take anybody lightly,” he said. “On paper, it might look like we should be the better team, but it worries me sometimes.”

This weekend’s Saturday matchup against Petersburg will also be the boys’ senior night. There are five seniors on the team: Keaton Gadd, Trevyn Gillen, Daniel Harrison, Lucas Schneider and Kyan Stead. Angerman acknowledged that seeing the boys play their last games in the Wrangell gym will be an emotional moment.

“It’s emotional for me. I’ve got to coach these guys all four years,” he said. “They’re a special group. … It’s not about basketball at all. It’s about forming a bond and hopefully keeping it with those guys.”
