Frederick "Fred" Clarence Angerman Jr. passed away unexpectedly on March 9, 2025, at the age of 68. Born Nov. 16, 1956, in Wrangell, Fred was the first of four children to Mercedes Angerman Sr. and Fred Angerman Sr.
Memorial services will take place on May 24 at the St. Philip's Episcopal Church, followed by a reception at the Nolan Center.
Fred was raised on Cassiar Street with siblings Jeff, Kyle and Mercedes Jr. He would continue to build his life on that street with wife Sumi and sons Aaron, Cody and Brad.
Fred acquired a strong work ethic from his dad at an early age, helping unpack and stock inventory at the Totem Bar. After high school, he worked a number of fishing, longshoring and homebuilding jobs before starting at Wrangell schools as a custodian in 1986. He was promoted to maintenance director in 2002 and retired in 2018.
Fred would fill the shoes of his father and become the Wrangell port manager for Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska and Southeast Stevedoring in 2005.
Beyond Wrangell, "Fast Freddy" was best known for excelling on the basketball court. His quickness and scoring abilities cemented him as one of the greatest to ever wear a Wrangell Wolves uniform.
His passion for Wrangell sports would continue throughout the rest of his life, becoming a legend of Wrangell's 3-on-3 tournament and city league. In 1991, he began a storied high school basketball refereeing career that spanned three decades. He was selected by his peers numerous times to referee regional and state tournaments.
Fred played basketball into his 40s and tennis with his friend Jeff Jabusch into his 60s. In recent years, his grandchildren kept him active. Like his sons before him, he chased them around, played sports and attended their games and school activities.
Fred will be remembered as a pillar of his family and Wrangell. He was a friend to everyone and never had a bad thing to say about anyone.
Fred is preceded in death by his father, Fred Sr., and younger brother Kyle (Kitty).
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sumi; his mother, Mercedes; siblings Jeff (Dawn) and Mercedes (Jay); sons Aaron (Mikki), Cody (Anna) and Brad (Kayleigh); grandchildren Alex, Devlyn, Griffey, Kyler, Maddox and Scarlett; nieces Rachel and Aminda; aunts Helen (Perk, deceased) and Kathie (Leonard, deceased); an uncle, Dick (Barbara); and numerous cousins and extended family.
