Spring is here: Adopt-a-garden program returns for third year

It may not seem like it, but it’s springtime, and for the third year in a row Parks and Recreation is organizing an adopt-a-garden program to maintain and beautify Wrangell’s downtown botanical offerings.

“Spring has sprung!” recreation coordinator Devyn Johnson said. “Beds are going to need to be cleaned up and taken care of.”

Parks and Rec is actively seeking volunteers for the program and the department hopes to begin working as soon as possible, weather permitting. Last year there were 10 groups and individuals who volunteered to keep up Wrangell’s downtown gardens.

To sign up, email Parks and Rec Director Lucy Robinson at lrobinson@wrangell.com or call 907-874-2444. Individuals, businesses and organizations are all eligible to sign up.

Volunteers, or “garden parents,” can help as frequently or as infrequently as they like. Johnson said that in the program’s inaugural year in 2023 volunteers helped out whenever they could. Some showed up to garden several times a month while others monitored the dozen flower and shrubbery beds just once a month or so.

Parks and Rec supplies all the needed equipment and the only donations they seek is the time of their volunteers. The department will also provide garden parents with instructions for upkeep and general care guidelines for respective garden beds.

“Let’s work together to add a little razzle dazzle to our streets, build community pride and make downtown Wrangell shine,” Parks and Rec posted on Facebook. “Whether you have a green thumb or just a passion for our community, your efforts will make a visible impact.”
