Elizabeth Burns was among the 32 Petersburg high school Alaska history students who spent the day in Wrangell on March 26, learning more about Tlingit culture and history - including totem pole carving. They toured Chief Shakes House and Totem Park, and tried their skills in a visit to the Wrangell Cooperative Association carving shed on Front Street. The Petersburg Indian Association helped cover expenses for the boat rides on Wrangell's Muddy Water Adventures, said Tim Shumway, the social studies teacher. The Wrangell visit had been a springtime tradition for Petersburg seniors until the COVID pandemic shut it down, Shumway said. It restarted last year on a small scale, with a full return this year.
