Sealaska shareholders invited to April 9 meeting in Wrangell

Sealaska, the regional for-profit Native corporation for Southeast Alaska, has scheduled a meeting for its shareholders from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at the Nolan Center.

The corporation is holding shareholder meetings across Southeast this spring, leading up to its annual meeting scheduled for June 21 in Kake.

The Sealaska board of directors will be at the Wrangell meeting, said Christian Gomez, communications lead for the Juneau-based corporation.

Tables will be set up in the civic center for shareholders to collect information and ask questions about Sealaska’s businesses, internship and scholarship programs, and workforce development opportunities, Gomez said March 27.

There will be brief presentations at the event, but most of the time will be set aside for people to walk around and learn about the different programs and businesses, he said.

Sealaska will provide food and door prizes. The meeting is open only to shareholders.

Similar meetings have already been held in Saxman and Ketchikan, with more planned across Southeast “over the next two-ish months,” Gomez said.

This year’s annual meeting will be the first ever in Kake, he said. “We’re still working out the details.”

Kake, a community of about 500 people, is on Kupreanof Island, about 70 air miles northwest of Wrangell.

Sealaska, one of a dozen Alaska Native regional corporations established in 1972 under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, has more than 26,000 shareholders.
