Software problem messes with March utility account payments

A software problem with the borough’s transition to cloud-based servers resulted in missed auto payments for some Wrangell utility customers in March.

Instead of the autopays going through as normal they went nowhere, and the April 1 account statements will show a delinquency for March, explained Jackson Pool, the borough’s finance director.

“Please be assured that all late fees related to this issue will be waived,” Pool reported in a March 26 announcement of the problem.

Wrangell has about 1,150 residential and commercial utility accounts covering water, sewage, trash pickup and electricity, with about 240 on autopay, he said. That includes people who have set up their utility account to automatically charge to their credit card each month or debit to their checking account.

“Our technicians are actively working to identify and resolve the problem,” the finance director said, adding that he expects it will be resolved and the autopay feature will be working again in time for April payments to post to all accounts.

The two software programs — the borough’s autopay function and the cloud — “did not play nice” with each other, Pool said.

“As a result, some customers may receive a delinquent notice when utility statements are issued on April 1,” he said in the announcement.

Until the problem is fixed, utility customers who owe for March because their autopay did not go through will need to either call City Hall at 907-874-2301 to make a payment by credit card, or go to wrangell.com/utilities to make a payment online.

The borough does not charge a fee for payment by credit card or bank debit.
