School board starts search for new superintendent

The school board is advertising on a tight timeline for a new schools superintendent to start work July 1, to replace Bill Burr who has resigned effective June 30 after four years on the job.

The deadline for applications is May 5, with the selection of finalists tentatively scheduled for May 7-9 and interviews with the board May 12-14.

The board scheduled a special meeting for 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, at Evergreen Elementary School to discuss additional “particulars of the superintendent search.” The board is expected to go into executive session for those discussions at the meeting.

At the regular monthly meeting on April 14, Board President Dave Wilson named board members John DeRuyter and Angela Allen to lead the search. The board voted unanimously to accept the appointments.

Wilson announced the appointments after the board returned to a public session at the end of their closed-door session to discuss filling the superintendent job.

“There was no action taken during executive session,” Wilson announced at the meeting. “It was purely discussion.”

State law allows elected officials to discuss personnel matters in executive session, but prohibits decisions in private.

Wilson explained the board would conduct the search on its own, rather than contracting with a recruitment firm.

The district’s help wanted ad says: “The board seeks a candidate with strong fiscal and budget management skills, effective communication skills, proven personnel leadership and a talent for building and maintaining positive community relationships with established tribal and community partners.”

“The salary is negotiable, depending on experience. An attractive benefits package is also offered, including life insurance, medical/health coverage (and) paid leave.”

Burr has not publicly provided a reason for his decision to leave the job. He has worked as an educator in Alaska the past 28 years.
